How do you rank higher in ChatGPT?
You don't rank in ChatGPT — there is no ranked list. You are either named in an answer or you aren't. What increases the odds, in order of evidence: making sure ChatGPT's crawlers can reach your site, being described accurately on the third-party sources it draws from, structuring content so individual passages answer questions on their own, and being a clearly resolved entity.
The most counter-intuitive part is that your own website is rarely the deciding factor. One study of 23,387 citations across the major engines found that on branded queries, around 57% of citations came from review sites, listicles and press, 17% from directories, and only about 4.5% from the brand's own About, FAQ or homepage.
What ChatGPT actually draws on
ChatGPT's source preferences are distinctive and well documented. It leans heavily on encyclopedic and authoritative references — Wikipedia is consistently its single most-cited domain, by a wide margin in some analyses — along with established news and reference sites.
Two findings shape strategy more than anything else:
A large share of its most-cited pages are unreachable to you. Roughly two-thirds of the top pages ChatGPT cites are properties you cannot pitch your way into — Wikipedia, government and educational institutions, app stores, major news outlets. That share of the citation pool is simply closed.
Google rankings barely predict it. Around 28% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages have no Google organic visibility at all, and the great majority of ChatGPT-cited URLs don't rank in Google's top 100. Whatever ChatGPT is selecting for, it isn't Google's ranking.
The corollary is encouraging: the competitive set is different. A business that can't outrank incumbents in Google may still be citable, because the selection logic isn't the same.
The six things that actually move it
1. Crawler access — check this before anything else
If ChatGPT can't fetch your pages, nothing else applies. Allow GPTBot (training and general crawl), OAI-SearchBot (indexing for ChatGPT search) and ChatGPT-User (fetches a page when a user asks ChatGPT to read a specific URL).
Check robots.txt *and* your CDN's bot rules separately — they frequently disagree, and bot-protection defaults block AI agents silently. Blocking these has no effect on Google rankings.
2. Third-party presence — the highest-leverage work
Given that most branded citations come from reviews, listicles and press rather than your own site, the highest-value work is getting your business accurately described where ChatGPT looks.
In practice: relevant review platforms and directories for your category, industry roundups and comparison articles, and communities where your category is discussed. Earned coverage has been measured substantially outperforming owned content for citation rates.
This is slow, unglamorous, and it's where the difference is made.
3. Wikipedia, if you genuinely qualify
Wikipedia is ChatGPT's dominant source. If your organisation meets Wikipedia's notability criteria — independent, substantial coverage in reliable sources — an accurate, well-sourced entry is among the highest-leverage assets available.
The caveat matters: do not attempt this if you don't qualify. Promotional or non-notable entries get deleted, and undisclosed paid editing violates Wikipedia's terms. If you don't meet the bar, invest in the coverage that would eventually create it.
4. Passage-level structure
Retrieval operates on chunks of text, not whole pages. Each section should answer its own question without depending on the section above it. A direct forty-to-sixty-word answer under a descriptive heading, then elaboration. The full structural guide.
5. Specifics and data
Pages carrying concrete figures, named methods and original data have been measured earning meaningfully more citations than equivalent text-only pages. A specific claim is more useful inside a synthesised answer than a general one, so it gets pulled more often.
6. Entity clarity
Consistent business name, consistent description, consistent Organization markup, and agreement between your site and your LinkedIn, Crunchbase and directory listings. These systems resolve entities; ambiguity costs you.
What doesn't work
Keyword stuffing for AI. There is no keyword field. Repetition doesn't increase retrieval probability.
llms.txt as a citation lever. Adoption sits near 10%, major AI crawlers rarely fetch it, and one large study found no relationship with citation rates — full evidence. Cheap and harmless. Not a lever.
Publishing more of the same. If you're absent because you're not an established entity in third-party sources, another twenty blog posts on your own domain doesn't address it.
Anyone guaranteeing you'll appear. Nobody controls what an AI system cites.
The uncomfortable part: citation without traffic
ChatGPT has been observed mentioning brands frequently while linking to them comparatively rarely — awareness without a click. Cloudflare's network analysis found some AI crawlers ingesting content at tens of thousands of times the rate they refer users back.
So conventional analytics will under-report this badly. If ChatGPT recommends you and the buyer then searches your brand name directly, your dashboard records a branded search, not an AI referral.
Track branded search volume and direct traffic alongside AI citation. They're the only proxy most businesses have for whether any of this is working.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my website to show up in ChatGPT? Ensure GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, then focus on being accurately described on third-party sources — review sites, directories, industry roundups — since most branded citations come from those rather than your own pages.
Does ChatGPT use Google rankings? Barely. Studies put the overlap between ChatGPT citations and Google's top 10 in the 6–8% range, and around 28% of its most-cited pages have no Google organic visibility at all.
How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT? Crawler access changes can take effect within weeks. Third-party presence and entity signals take months, because they depend on other publishers and on index refresh cycles you don't control.
Does Wikipedia help with ChatGPT visibility? Substantially, when you genuinely qualify — Wikipedia is consistently ChatGPT's most-cited source. Don't attempt an entry if you don't meet notability criteria; it will be removed and undisclosed paid editing breaches Wikipedia's rules.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers? Not in the cited-source portion. OpenAI began introducing advertising in ChatGPT in early 2026, but that is a separate ad surface, not the citations inside an answer.
Why does ChatGPT mention my brand but not link to it? ChatGPT has been observed mentioning brands considerably more often than it links to them. A mention builds awareness; the resulting visit typically arrives later as a branded search, which analytics attribute elsewhere.
