What is topical authority?
Topical authority is the idea that a site that covers a subject thoroughly, with connected, well-written pages, is more likely to be treated as a reliable source on it. The practice is to plan content around a topic and its sub-questions, not around single keywords.
"Topical authority" is an SEO industry term. Google does not publish a setting or score by that name. That does not make the practice wrong. It means you should be careful about anyone who sells it as a measured number.
What is proven, plausible and unproven
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Pages that answer a question clearly and completely perform better than thin ones | Well supported. This is the basis of Google's own helpful-content guidance |
| Linking related pages helps search engines and readers find them | Well supported. See our internal linking guide |
| Covering the sub-questions of a topic can help a site rank for more of its queries | Plausible, and consistent with how AI answers are assembled from several sub-queries. Not proven as a distinct signal |
| Publishing many articles builds authority by itself | Not supported. Many thin articles without structure add noise, not authority |
| A specific internal Google score, quoted by name, can be raised by a tactic | Unproven. Google has not explained how any such metric is used for ranking |
| "Topical authority is the main way to get cited by AI assistants" | Unproven. It is a vendor claim. Clear, accurate pages and third-party mentions both matter |
How to build it in six steps
- Pick one topic you want to be known for. One, not five. It should connect to what you sell.
- List the questions around it. Use search suggestions, your customers' emails and sales calls, and the questions your competitors' pages answer. Group them into sub-topics.
- Map what you already have to those questions. Our keyword mapping guide shows how.
- Find the gaps and the overlaps. Missing questions need a page. Two pages answering the same question compete, which is keyword cannibalisation.
- Write the missing pages so each answers one question well and links to its neighbours and to the main page for the topic.
- Add structure. Use clear headings, consistent names for the same thing and accurate schema markup where it applies.
Where entities fit
An entity is a distinct thing a search engine can identify: a company, a person, a product, a place. Entity SEO means being clear and consistent about what your entities are across your site and other sources. Use the same name and description for your business everywhere, and say how your products and people relate to each other. It supports the above; it is not a separate trick.
How to measure it
- Search Console: impressions and clicks for the queries in your topic, month on month.
- Pages ranking per topic: how many of your topic's questions you appear for.
- AI answers: run the same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google and note whether you are cited. Our AI search guide gives a method.
Expect months, not weeks. If someone promises a topical authority score within a month, ask what the number measures.
Common mistakes
- Writing 50 loosely related posts to "cover" a topic.
- Building a cluster with no internal links between its pages.
- Chasing every sub-topic instead of the ones tied to what you sell.
- Treating a tool's "authority score" as Google's view.
Frequently asked questions
What is topical authority? It is the idea that a site covering a subject thoroughly, with connected and well-written pages, is more likely to be seen as a reliable source on it. It is an industry term, not a Google setting.
Is topical authority a Google ranking factor? Google does not list it as one. The practice of covering a topic well is consistent with Google's guidance on helpful content, but a separate topical authority signal is not proven.
What is a topic cluster? A group of pages about one subject: a main page that covers the topic broadly and supporting pages that each answer one sub-question, all linked together.
How many articles do I need? There is no fixed number. Cover the questions that matter to your customers once each, well. Thin pages added for volume do not help.
What is entity SEO? It is making sure the things you talk about, such as your business, products and people, are described clearly and consistently so search engines can identify them.
Plan the cluster before you write it
TapasSEO's Topic Cluster Playbook maps one topic into a set of pages: the questions to answer, which page answers each, and how they link. You get a build order you can hand to a writer.
