Answer Engine Optimization: What's Actually In Scope

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is optimising content to be extracted as a direct answer rather than shown as a ranked link. The surfaces are featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant responses, and increasingly the answer portion of AI Overviews. Success means owning the answer, which often means the user never clicks.

AEO sits between SEO and GEO. It predates both AI Overviews and ChatGPT — featured snippets have existed for over a decade — but the practice became more valuable as answer surfaces expanded and more valuable still as the same structural work started feeding AI citation.

What still exists in 2026

The AEO surface has narrowed considerably, and a lot of published advice hasn't caught up.

Two consequences. First, the standard AEO recommendation of the last five years — add FAQ schema to capture the dropdown — no longer produces a SERP feature. Second, FAQ *content* is still worth writing; it's the display feature that's gone, not the value of answering questions directly. The full picture on schema is here.

Snippets are extracted from pages already ranking on page one, usually within the top five. You cannot snippet your way onto page one. Rank first, then structure for extraction.

Then match the format to the query:

Paragraph snippets — for definitional and "what is" queries. Put a self-contained forty-to-sixty-word answer immediately under a heading matching the question. No preamble, no "in this article we'll explore."

List snippets — for process and ranking queries. Use real <ol> or <ul> markup with short items. Google frequently builds these from H2s and H3s as well.

Table snippets — for comparison and pricing queries. Use real <table> markup. Tables are the most extractable structure on the web and are disproportionately pulled into both snippets and AI answers.

Video snippets — for demonstration queries. Requires chapters or key moments.

The pattern that works across all four: answer immediately, then elaborate. Everything that makes content snippet-friendly also makes it citable by AI engines, which is why the two disciplines converged.

People Also Ask

PAA rewards breadth rather than depth. Boxes expand as users click, so a page covering many adjacent questions has many chances to appear.

Practical approach: collect the PAA questions on your target query, expand a few of them to see what nests underneath, and cover the ones genuinely relevant to your page with a heading and a short direct answer each. Question-formatted H2s, forty-to-sixty-word answers.

PAA appearances rarely drive much traffic on their own. Their value is presence — appearing repeatedly on a results page you don't otherwise dominate, and feeding the same passages AI systems retrieve.

Voice

Voice answers are largely drawn from featured snippets, so most voice optimisation is snippet optimisation. Two adjustments:

Conversational phrasing. Spoken queries are longer and more natural. Cover the question as someone would say it aloud, not just the compressed typed version.

A speakable answer. An assistant reads roughly one to three sentences. If your answer needs a table to make sense, it won't be read out.

The zero-click reality

Winning an answer surface frequently means the user gets what they need without visiting your site. That's real and it isn't going away.

Two reasons to do it anyway. Brand presence compounds — being the named source repeatedly builds recognition that shows up later as direct and branded search, even when nobody clicked. And the same work feeds AI citation, because the structures that make a passage extractable for a snippet make it extractable for a generated answer.

The honest caveat: measure it properly. Search Console will show impressions rising and clicks flat, which looks like failure and isn't necessarily. Track branded search volume and direct traffic alongside it.

What AEO services should include

If you're buying it: content restructuring for extraction, question research from PAA and real customer language, schema on types that still produce results, snippet-format matching per target query, and competitor snippet displacement analysis.

What should raise an eyebrow: FAQ schema sold as a SERP feature tactic, or "AEO" that turns out to be an AI monitoring dashboard. The second is GEO territory, and it's a different product.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization? Optimising content to be extracted as a direct answer rather than shown as a ranked link — featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice responses and the answer text in AI Overviews.

Is AEO the same as GEO? No. AEO targets answer features on the search results page. GEO targets citation inside AI-generated answers from systems like ChatGPT and Perplexity. They share structural techniques and overlap increasingly.

Does FAQ schema still work for AEO? Not for a SERP feature. Google retired FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026. FAQ content remains worth writing — direct answers to real questions are extractable regardless — but the schema no longer produces a dropdown.

How do I get a featured snippet? Rank on page one first, usually top five, then structure for extraction: a self-contained forty-to-sixty-word answer directly under a heading matching the query, in the format the query calls for — paragraph, list or table.

Do featured snippets increase traffic? Sometimes. They often reduce clicks by answering the question in place. The value is brand presence, position above the standard results, and the fact that the same structure feeds AI citation.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO? SEO targets ranked links; AEO targets extracted answers on the same page. AEO depends on SEO — you must rank before you can be extracted.

How do I optimise for voice search? Optimise for featured snippets, since voice answers are largely drawn from them. Use conversational question phrasing and keep the core answer to one to three speakable sentences.

AI Overview Targeting restructures pages for extraction across snippets, PAA and AI Overview answer text — the surfaces that share signals.

SERP Feature Optimization targets specific snippets you don't currently hold, including displacement analysis on competitors who do.
