What's the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO optimises for ranked links in a search engine. AEO optimises for direct answers extracted onto the results page — featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice responses. GEO optimises for being cited inside an AI-generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews. They target different surfaces, they overlap substantially, and all three depend on the same foundation: content a machine can reach, parse and trust.
The terms are newer than the practices. Most of what works for GEO was already good SEO; what changed is the surface and how success is measured.
The three, side by side
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | Search engine optimisation | Answer engine optimisation | Generative engine optimisation |
| Target surface | Ranked blue links | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice | AI-generated answers and citations |
| Where it appears | Google, Bing SERPs | Same SERPs, above the links | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews |
| Success looks like | Position 1–3 | Owning the answer box | Being named or cited in the answer |
| Primary metric | Rankings, organic traffic | Snippet ownership, PAA presence | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice |
| Click outcome | Click to your site | Often zero-click | Often zero-click, sometimes a citation link |
What's genuinely different about GEO
Four things that don't have SEO equivalents.
There is no position. You're either in the answer or you aren't. There's no page two to climb from. This makes GEO more binary and, in the early stages, harder to move incrementally.
Engines diverge sharply. Different AI engines draw from substantially different source pools. Being cited well in one tells you little about another. A single blended "AI visibility score" conceals the only dimension that matters.
Third-party content counts as much as yours. AI answers are frequently assembled from review sites, forums, industry publications and comparison articles — sources *about* you rather than *by* you. A Reddit thread or a G2 listing can matter more to your citation rate than your homepage. That's uncomfortable and it's the reality.
Entity clarity beats keyword targeting. These systems resolve entities — who is this company, what do they do, is this the same organisation mentioned elsewhere. Consistent naming, consistent Organization markup, and consistent third-party descriptions matter more than keyword placement.
What's the same
More than the marketing suggests.
- Crawlability. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended can't reach your pages, nothing else applies. This is robots.txt work — the same discipline as always.
- Clear structure. Descriptive headings, direct answers near the top, tables for comparisons. Good for snippets, good for extraction, good for readers.
- Authority and trust. Systems that decide what to cite still weigh whether a source is credible.
- Freshness. AI answers skew recent. So do search results.
Anyone selling GEO as a discipline unrelated to SEO is selling a rebrand. The overlap is most of it.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No, and the framing is wrong in both directions.
Search traffic hasn't disappeared. AI answers increasingly sit above it and absorb a share of clicks, particularly informational ones, which changes the mix — but the underlying signals feeding both are largely shared. Work that improves your position in Google generally improves your odds of being cited by an AI engine, because the engine is often drawing from the same pool.
What's genuinely changing is the value of a click versus a mention. If a buyer forms a shortlist from a ChatGPT answer and never visits any site until the final comparison, being on that shortlist is worth more than ranking fourth for a term they never typed.
That's why measurement has to change even where the work doesn't. Organic sessions won't capture it.
Where to start
If you're doing none of this: start with SEO fundamentals. Crawlability, indexation, clear page structure, content that answers real questions. GEO built on an uncrawlable site is nothing.
If your SEO is solid: the highest-leverage GEO work is structural — direct answers near the top of pages, definition-first phrasing, tables, and consistent entity signals. Most of it improves your ordinary search performance too.
If you're already visible in search but absent from AI answers: that's usually an entity or third-party-signal problem rather than a content problem. Diagnose before writing more.
Before any of it: measure where you stand. Run ten real buying questions through ChatGPT and Perplexity and record what happens. It takes twenty minutes and it's the only baseline that matters.
Frequently asked questions
What does GEO stand for in SEO? Generative engine optimisation — optimising to be cited inside AI-generated answers from systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Not to be confused with geographic or local SEO, which is unrelated.
Is GEO different from SEO? It targets a different surface and is measured differently — citation rate rather than ranking — but it depends on the same foundations: crawlability, clear structure, authority and freshness. Most GEO work improves search performance too.
What is AEO? Answer engine optimisation — optimising for direct answers extracted onto the results page, such as featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice responses. It predates GEO and sits between SEO and GEO.
Will GEO replace SEO? No. AI answers absorb a share of informational clicks and sit above traditional results, but the signals feeding both overlap heavily. What changes is measurement — organic sessions won't capture a mention that never produced a click.
How do you measure GEO? Mention rate, citation rate and share of voice against competitors, tracked per engine rather than blended. Engines draw from different source pools, so a single combined score hides the useful information.
Does GEO require different content? Mostly it requires the same content structured better — direct answers near the top, definition-first phrasing, tables, explicit entity naming instead of pronouns. These improve snippets and readability as well.
