Why Google Ads Clicks Never Match Google Analytics Sessions

Short answer

Google Ads counts every click. GA4 counts only the visits where its tag loaded and was allowed to run. The two will never match, and a gap is normal. The question is how big, and whether it is the kind of gap that means something is broken.

What a normal gap looks like

For search ads, expect GA4 to show somewhere between half and most of your clicks. A big shortfall is a warning. For Performance Max, which runs on Display and YouTube as well as Search, expect much less. Many Display and YouTube clicks are accidental taps that leave before the page loads.

Here is what we found on our own account in October 2026. We ran the same check we describe below.

Campaign typeAds clicksGA4 sessionsRatio
Search4018about 45%
Performance Max (after the Ads link)26924about 9%

The PMax figure looks bad. The Search figure is the one that deserved attention. We found the main cause was our own consent setup.

Seven reasons the numbers differ

1. Clicks are not visits. A user can tap an ad and leave before the page loads, double-tap, or be a bot. Google filters some invalid clicks out of what it charges, but the click still occurred.

2. Consent settings hide visitors from GA4. If your cookie banner sets analytics consent to "denied" until the visitor chooses, GA4 only measures the people who accept. Google Ads still counts the click. This was the biggest cause on our site. All our clicks came from the US, where a default of "denied" is stricter than the law usually requires, so we changed the default for visitors outside the EU, UK and Switzerland. Decide your own setting with your privacy adviser.

3. The GA4 to Ads link is missing. Without the link, GA4 cannot label a session with its campaign. Sessions arrive, but you cannot match them. The link is not retroactive: our campaigns only showed up in GA4 from the day we linked them.

4. Performance Max reaches Display and YouTube. These placements produce cheap clicks with low intent. Google reports placement impressions for PMax, but not clicks or cost per placement, so you cannot see which placement produced which click.

5. Time zones differ. Ads reports in the account's time zone. GA4 reports in the property's. A mismatch moves clicks across midnight.

6. Your own testing counts. If you open your landing pages with tracking parameters, GA4 records them as paid sessions. On small sites that distorts the totals.

7. Page speed. A slow page loses visitors before the tag runs. This is rarely the main cause, but check it. Redirects that drop the click ID would also lose attribution, so test your landing URLs with a click ID attached.

How to find the cause: check in this order

  1. Compare like for like. Search clicks against GA4 "Paid Search" sessions. PMax clicks against GA4 "Cross-network" sessions. Do not compare Search clicks with all google / cpc traffic, because both Search and PMax show as google / cpc.
  2. Check the Ads link and auto-tagging. Confirm auto-tagging is on in Ads and the account is linked in GA4.
  3. Check your consent defaults. Open your cookie banner's settings and read what happens before a visitor clicks anything.
  4. Check redirects. Open a landing URL with a made-up click ID and confirm it survives to the final page.
  5. Exclude internal traffic in GA4 and re-compare.
  6. Check time zones in both accounts.
  7. Look at placements if PMax is a big share of your clicks.

Conversions: a second mismatch

Ads and GA4 also disagree on conversions. Two common causes:

On our account, Ads showed five conversions in one day. Three were a checkout step and two were purchase events from voucher and test orders. None was a sale to an outside customer. We moved the checkout steps to secondary so only purchases drive bidding.

Frequently asked questions

Is a gap between Google Ads clicks and GA4 sessions normal? Yes. A click is counted when someone taps. A session is counted only when GA4's tag loads and has permission to run. Some gap is always normal.

How big a gap should worry me? For search campaigns, if GA4 shows far fewer than half of your clicks, investigate. Performance Max will show a larger gap because Display and YouTube clicks are often accidental.

Why does Performance Max show so many more clicks than sessions? It serves ads on Display, YouTube and other placements where taps are often accidental and the visitor leaves before the page loads.

Why are my GA4 paid sessions missing campaign names? The GA4 property is probably not linked to your Google Ads account, or the link was made recently. Linking is not retroactive.

Can my cookie banner cause the gap? Yes. If analytics consent defaults to "denied", GA4 measures only visitors who accept, while Google Ads counts every click.

Fix the measurement before you judge the ads

You cannot tell whether an ad works if you cannot see who arrived. TapasSEO's Analytics, Tag Management & SEO Tracking Setup installs and tests GA4, links Ads, sets key events and checks your consent behaviour, so the two reports line up as far as they can.
