Why setup matters more than the reports
Analytics fails quietly. A missing tag, a duplicate tag or a wrong filter does not throw an error. It gives you plausible numbers that are wrong. Most of the mistakes below look fine in the reports until someone compares them with another source, such as Google Ads.
This checklist covers Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console, in the order we set them up.
Part 1: Google Analytics 4
1. Create one property and one web data stream. Use your live domain. Copy the measurement ID (it starts with G-) and install the tag once, either directly or through Tag Manager. Do not do both. A site that loads GA4 from two places double counts.
2. Keep enhanced measurement on, then check what it tracks. Page views, scrolls, outbound clicks and file downloads are automatic. Confirm the ones you care about fire correctly.
3. Raise data retention. Event data retention defaults to a short period. Set it to the maximum your property allows (14 months) in the property's data settings. Otherwise your explorations cannot look back.
4. Mark the actions that matter as key events. GA4 only reports conversions for events you mark as key events. If you never marked a purchase, lead form or booking, your conversion report is empty by design. Tick the events that are real business outcomes, not every click.
5. Exclude internal traffic. Define your office or team IP addresses as internal traffic, then activate the filter. On a small site, your own testing is a large share of sessions. We saw this on our own account: test visits sat inside the "paid" numbers.
6. Check your referral exclusions. Payment pages and sign-in domains can show up as the traffic source and break the original attribution. List them as unwanted referrals.
7. Link Google Ads. Without the link, GA4 cannot attach an ad campaign name to a session. Open the property's product links, link your Ads account, and turn on auto-tagging in Ads. Linking is not retroactive. We linked ours on 15 October 2026, so earlier days stay without campaign names.
8. Plan for consent. If you use a cookie banner, check what the default is before any visitor chooses. If analytics consent defaults to "denied", GA4 only measures people who accept, and Google Ads will count more clicks than GA4 shows sessions. Decide the default deliberately, by region, with your privacy adviser.
Part 2: Google Search Console
9. Add a Domain property. A Domain property covers every protocol and subdomain. You verify it with a DNS record at your registrar. Use a URL-prefix property only if you cannot edit DNS.
10. Submit your XML sitemap. Submit the sitemap URL and check that the discovered page count matches what you expect. Our XML sitemap guide covers common errors.
11. Link Search Console to GA4. In GA4 admin, link the Search Console property so query and landing-page data appear next to your sessions.
12. Test, then watch for a week. Open the site with your own device and check the real-time report shows the visit. Then compare numbers: GA4 sessions against Search Console clicks, and Ads clicks against GA4 paid sessions. They will not match exactly. The gaps tell you what to investigate.
The five mistakes we see most
| Mistake | What you see |
|---|---|
| Two tags on the same page | Double the real sessions |
| No key events marked | An empty conversions report |
| Internal traffic not excluded | Inflated sessions on small sites |
| No Ads link | Paid sessions without campaign names |
| Consent defaults hiding visitors | Sessions far below ad clicks |

Frequently asked questions
How long does GA4 take to show data? Real-time reports show a visit within seconds. Standard reports can take many hours to process, so do not judge a new setup on the first day.
Do I need Google Tag Manager? No. You can install the GA4 tag directly. Tag Manager helps when you add several tags and want to control them in one place. Use one method, not both.
What is a key event in GA4? It is an event you mark as important to your business, such as a purchase or a form submission. GA4 uses key events for conversion reporting.
Why don't my Search Console clicks match my GA4 sessions? They measure different things. Search Console counts clicks from Google Search results. GA4 counts sessions where its tag loaded, which depends on consent, speed and blockers.
What is the difference between a Domain property and a URL-prefix property? A Domain property covers all subdomains and both http and https, and needs DNS verification. A URL-prefix property covers one exact address.
Get it set up once, correctly
Analytics that is wrong is worse than none, because you make decisions on it. TapasSEO's Analytics, Tag Management & SEO Tracking Setup installs GA4 and Search Console, marks the right key events, links Ads, excludes internal traffic and tests the result before it hands over.
If your setup is live and the numbers look off, the Technical SEO Starter checks the tags and crawl basics that often sit behind it.
